If you have recently become an Australian citizen — or a citizen of another country — and previously held an Indian passport, you must renounce your Indian citizenship and surrender your Indian passport. This is a legal requirement because India does not allow dual citizenship.
You can maintain strong ties with India through the Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card, but you must first complete the renunciation and surrender process.
See my YouTube video here for a step-by-step visual guide.
Understanding Renunciation vs Passport Surrender
Many people confuse the two, but they are separate formalities:
- Renunciation of Indian Citizenship – The legal process of giving up Indian citizenship after acquiring foreign nationality.
- Surrender of Indian Passport – Officially cancelling your Indian passport, which becomes invalid the day you acquire foreign citizenship.
Both steps are mandatory and, in most cases, can be completed together through VFS Global in Australia.
