If you are an Indian-origin Australian citizen planning to travel frequently to India, you have probably heard about the OCI card. The Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) card is one of the most important documents for former Indian citizens and their families living overseas.
After recently completing my own OCI application process in Australia, including dealing with application mistakes and re-submissions, I created this comprehensive guide to help others avoid the same issues.
This article covers:
- What OCI is
- OCI benefits and limitations
- Eligibility criteria
- Documents required
- OCI application
- Photo and signature requirements
- Common mistakes to avoid
- Processing time and costs
- FAQ’s
What is OCI?
OCI stands for Overseas Citizenship of India. Although it is commonly referred to as “dual citizenship,” India does not legally allow dual citizenship. Instead, OCI acts as a lifelong visa and provides many rights similar to permanent residency in India.
An OCI card allows eligible foreign citizens of Indian origin to travel to India freely without repeatedly applying for visas.
Benefits of an OCI Card
Some of the major benefits of holding an OCI card include:
– Lifelong Visa for India
OCI cardholders can travel to India multiple times without needing a separate visa.
– No Need for FRRO Registration
OCI holders generally do not need to register with the Foreigners Regional Registration Office for extended stays in India.
– Access to Education
OCI cardholders can apply for many educational courses, entrance exams, and institutions available to Indian citizens.
– Property-Related Benefits
OCI holders can purchase residential and commercial property in India without requiring regular RBI approvals.
OCI Eligibility Criteria
You may be eligible for OCI if you fall under one of the following categories:
– Former Indian Citizens
– Children and Descendants
– Spouse of Indian Citizen or OCI Holder
– Minor Children
Important OCI Exclusions
You are not eligible for OCI if you have ever been a citizen of Pakistan or Bangladesh.
OCI Limitations
While OCI provides many benefits, there are also restrictions.
OCI cardholders:
- Cannot vote in Indian elections
- Cannot become Members of Parliament or Legislative Assemblies
- Cannot hold positions such as President, Vice President, or Supreme Court Judge
- Cannot purchase agricultural land, plantation property, or farmhouses
Special permits may also be required for:
- Research activities
- Journalism
- Government internships
- Visiting restricted or protected areas
Documents Required for OCI in Australia
The documents required can vary depending on your situation. However, some common documents include:

OCI Photo and Signature Requirements
One of the most common reasons applications get delayed is incorrect photo uploads.

Common OCI Application Mistakes
During my own OCI process, I encountered several issues that delayed my application. Some common mistakes include:

- Photo formatting issues
- Signature mismatches
Carefully reviewing every upload before submission can save significant delays.
OCI Application Process in Australia

Fill out the application through the official OCI services portal.
Important:
- Use your Australian passport details
- Ensure parent names match your Indian passport exactly
Step 2: Upload Documents
Upload all mandatory documents, photographs, and signatures.
Step 3: Book a VFS Appointment
OCI applications in Australia now require in-person submission at a VFS Global centre.
Applications can no longer be mailed.
Appointment wait times can be lengthy, so booking early is recommended.
Step 4: Attend the Appointment
Bring:

- Printed copies
- Application forms
- Passport photographs if required
All documents should be printed single-sided on A4 paper.

Yes. One useful feature is that you can re-upload your photograph, signature, or documents without restarting the entire application.
You simply:
- Return to the application dashboard
- Enter your application ID
- Select photo/signature upload or document upload
- Re-upload the corrected files
OCI Processing Time in Australia
Based on my experience, the OCI application took slightly over two months from submission to delivery.
Processing times can vary depending on demand and application complexity.
OCI Application Cost
My total OCI application cost was approximately AUD $456.
VFS Global provides an official fee calculator to estimate current charges.
Important Property Rules for OCI Holders
OCI cardholders can:
- Purchase residential property
- Purchase commercial property
- Inherit agricultural land from resident Indians
However, OCI holders cannot directly purchase:
- Agricultural land
- Plantation property
- Farmhouses
Payments must generally be made through Indian banking channels, often using an NRO account.
Fast Track Immigration for OCI Holders
India has introduced the Fast Track Immigration – Trusted Traveller Programme (FTI-TTP) for OCI cardholders.
This program allows registered OCI holders to use automated e-gates at selected Indian international airports for faster immigration clearance.
Final Thoughts
Applying for OCI from Australia can feel overwhelming, especially because requirements, upload rules, and processes can change regularly.
However, with proper preparation and careful document review, the process becomes much smoother.
If you are planning to apply for OCI soon, make sure to:
- Double-check all uploads
- Book your VFS appointment early
- Follow the latest official guidelines
- Keep copies of all submitted documents
I also created a full step-by-step video guide explaining the OCI process in simple language based on my personal experience applying from Australia.
